Did you know that while food banks address hunger, they often fail to provide the skills needed to escape food insecurity for good?

At Bags of Taste, we go beyond temporary fixes. Our mission is to tackle food insecurity by addressing its root causes through a structured, evidence-based behavioural change programme. With a 78% graduation rate, we ensure no one is left behind.

The Problem:

The effects of poor diets in the UK are staggering. Poor nutrition is the largest killer in the UK, with studies showing that improved diet can increase life expectancy by up to 10 years. The financial impact is just as severe, with poor diets accounting for 40% of the NHS’s annual budget. However, many food poverty initiatives focus on short term relief through food banks and voucher systems, which provide immediate support but fail to tackle the root causes of food insecurity.

Many facing poverty lack the practical skills necessary for cooking, budgeting and meal planning leaving many struggling even after receiving help which can lead to a feeling of being trapped in a cycle of poor health and financial struggles. These gaps leave individuals vulnerable long after the immediate crisis has passed, highlighting the need for a more sustainable approach.

What Makes Bags of Taste Unique?

Bags of Taste is designed to fill this gap. The dietary behaviour change interventions we deliver are very different to those provided by other community cooking programmes and enable us to support more vulnerable participants, reducing health inequalities.

Our programme focuses on long-term behavioural changes through a hands on cooking programme and personalised mentorship. Participants learn how to eat well on a limited budget, breaking the cycle of food insecurity and improving their quality of life.

What sets Bags of Taste apart is its holistic approach. The focus isn’t simply on teaching cooking skills – in fact, most participants already know how to cook – but on helping people overcome the practical and psychological barriers to shopping, cooking and eating more healthily.

Participants don’t just learn how to cook; trained mentors provide advice on shopping locally on a budget, reducing food waste and essential budgeting and meal-planning skills. This daily support, practical advice, accountability and encouragement by mentors is the reason why so many people successfully complete the programme and make sustained changes.

The programme has proved to be impactful, with many participants saving over £1,000 annually on food costs while improving their diets and overall well-being. The impact of Bags of Taste extends far beyond financial savings. The programme helps build essential life skills, cooking skills, breaking the cycle of poor diet and poor mental and physical health.

Accessible, adaptable and highly effective

Bags of Taste stands out because it is accessible, adaptable, and highly effective. The programme is designed to be inclusive and adaptable. By supporting people in their own homes, at a time of their choosing, it can fit around people’s lives and individual limitations. We have found that the behaviours and attitudes people develop in the relaxed environment of their own kitchen (especially when cooking with their families) are far more likely to be embedded and sustained, compared to the artificial environment of typical out-of-home cookery classes.

This different, home-centred approach, developed and refined over the last 10 years, is the reason why Bags of Taste has proven to be such an effective programme, delivering measurable and sustainable dietary change, financial savings and benefits to participants’ physical and mental health.

We collaborate closely with local organisations and charities for referrals and logistical support. Our expert mentors, supported by organisations such as the Association for Nutrition and the Food Teachers’ centre, offer personalised, long-term support.

Nadine told us:

“Having support on the phone was great as I could ask questions without feeling stupid that I did not know the answers”.

Unlike large-scale government initiatives, who can’t do this kind of granular, personal work, Bags of Taste focuses on prevention rather than cure. By addressing food insecurity at its roots, we provide proactive, rather than reactive solutions that empower individuals.

Pete’s Story:

The impact of Bags of Taste can be seen in the real-life experiences of our participants. After completing the programme, 86% of participants cook more frequently, and 78% continue using the recipes they learnt. A further 10% were inspired to try other new recipes inspired by the skills they’ve gained.

Take Pete for example. Pete had been unemployed for some time and suffered from poor mental and physical health. After completing the Bags of Taste programme, he started eating better which led to increased confidence and gave him more energy. This meant that he began engaging better with advisors and led him to doing other courses to improve his physical and mental well-being. Eventually, Pete found a job which completely transformed his life- all thanks to the Bags of Taste programme.

Why Do the Gaps Exist?

The gaps in some current community food initiatives often derive from limited resources available for education and long-term support. They often lack awareness regarding how impactful practical cooking and budgeting skills can be. Bags of Taste addresses this oversight by combining expertise, innovation, and community support. Our approach ensures that participants gain the tools and confidence to break free from food insecurity permanently.

Bags of Taste empowers individuals to break free from poverty. Together, we can ensure that everyone has the skills and confidence to cook healthy, affordable meals- no matter their circumstances.
